Preparing a Wall with Mould or Grease Before Waterproofing
Before waterproofing, wash mould with water and bleach in equal parts and grease with water and neutral detergent. How to prep the surface for Coral.
Before applying Coral Proteção Sol & Chuva waterproofing, a wall with mould or grease is cleaned first, because the film is specified to go over a surface that is firm, clean and free of those contaminants. The technical sheet gives a specific routine for each case.
Mould
Mix water and bleach in equal parts, wash the affected area, wait 6 hours, rinse well and let it dry completely. Only after the surface is dry does the waterproofing go on. The waterproofing film itself also fights algae and mould once applied, but that does not replace cleaning an already contaminated surface.
Grease
Wash with water and neutral detergent, rinse and dry. Grease, like oil and wax, keeps the film from adhering, so it is removed before any coat.
General preparation
As a rule, sand the surface and remove the dust with a damp cloth. Beyond mould and grease, the sheet maps the main surface conditions to a treatment:
- Good repaint in good condition: clean and remove loose parts.
- Weak render, lime-painted walls or loose parts: apply the preparing primer for walls.
- Fresh render: wait 30 days of cure; if that is not possible, the waterproofing paint can be applied directly because of its antisaltpeter action, covered in waterproofing new plaster without waiting for full cure.
- Moisture: fix the cause of the moisture before starting.
Cracks and fissures are a separate step
Openings in the wall follow their own treatment, from a preparing primer on a shallow fissure to a V cut, product-and-sand fill and polyester mesh on a structural crack, described in treating cracks before waterproofing a facade.
After preparation
Do not apply on rainy days, below 10°C or above 40°C, or with relative humidity above 85%. What the film resolves on a wall with moisture, and what still needs fixing at the source, is covered in acrylic waterproofing for exterior walls with moisture.
