Coral Wandepoxy Epoxy on Concrete and Burnt Cement Floors: Prep, Cure and Light Traffic
How to prepare concrete and burnt cement floors for Coral Wandepoxy epoxy: 30-day cure, muriatic acid 80:20, primer and enamel, cure and light traffic only.
Coral Wandepoxy lists rustic concrete floors and burnt cement floors among its indicated surfaces, with one condition stated in the technical sheet: light traffic. The epoxy enamel is described as an internal-use product, and the sheet gives more attention to floor preparation than to any other step.
Floor preparation
Preparation follows standard ABNT NBR 13245. The surface must be firm, cohesive, clean and free of grease, oil or mould.
- Rustic concrete: cured for at least 30 days, perfectly clean and free of grease, oil or any other contaminant.
- Burnt cement: treated before painting with a solution of water and muriatic acid in an 80:20 ratio by volume, then rinsed and left to dry completely.
- Imperfections: corrected with Wandepoxy Massa Epóxi (epoxy filler), which the sheet indicates for concrete floor repair. After sanding, another coat of primer is applied.
Application sequence
- Epoxy primer (Fundo Epóxi), catalysed 3:1, in 1 to 2 coats. Touch dry in 3 hours, covering 43 to 54 m² per gallon per coat.
- Epoxy filler (Massa Epóxi), if needed, catalysed 3:1, in 2 to 3 coats, touch dry in 1 hour.
- Catalysable epoxy enamel, applied 12 to 18 hours after the primer, in 2 to 3 coats, catalysed 3:1 for ready-made colours or 4:1 for the tinting system. It covers up to 50 m² per gallon per coat in a ready-made colour.
Between enamel coats the interval is 12 to 48 hours, and after that period the surface is sanded before the next coat. Before applying, wait the induction time of 15 to 20 minutes after catalysing, and the mix has a pot life of 6 hours at most. Thinning uses Diluente Wandepoxy: up to 10% for brush and up to 20% for roller or spray gun. The step by step for the whole system is in the guide on how to assemble the Coral Wandepoxy system.
Cure and use of the floor
The enamel is touch dry in 2 hours, handling dry in 6 hours and fully dry in 24 hours, but full cure takes 7 days, during which the surface should not be exposed to stress. After that, cleaning is done with a soft sponge dampened with water and neutral detergent.
Documented limits
- Light traffic: the sheet does not indicate the system for heavy traffic.
- Internal use: the enamel is described as an internal-use product, and the sheet advises avoiding rainy days and hot surfaces exposed to the sun, so an external floor is not among its indications.
- Not indicated for pools, water tanks or glazed ceramic floors.
- Avoid application below 10°C or above 40°C, or with relative humidity above 85%.
The system’s resistance to moisture and chemicals is detailed in the guide on moisture and chemical resistance of Coral Wandepoxy epoxy, and the same film is specified for internal metal in Coral Wandepoxy epoxy paint for metal. The technical bulletins are published at coral.com.br, and the products are sold through the Coral store.
