Moisture and Chemical Resistance of Coral Wandepoxy Epoxy: Where to Use and Where Not To
What Coral Wandepoxy epoxy resists (moisture, chemicals, abrasion) and where it should not be used, such as pools, water tanks and vitrified ceramic.
Epoxy paint responds well to damp environments and exposure to cleaning products, but it has defined indications and limits. In the case of Coral Wandepoxy, a catalysed, two-component epoxy system, the technical data sheet documents both what the film resists and where it should not be applied.
What the film resists
Once mixed with the catalyst, Wandepoxy Epóxi Catalisável (catalysable epoxy enamel) forms a glossy film of high hardness, with resistance to moisture, chemical products, abrasion and alkalinity. The finish is smooth, with low dirt pickup and easy to clean. These properties explain why the product is indicated for painting bathrooms, kitchens, canteens, hospitals, industrial and domestic piping and concrete floors. The resistance depends on full cure: final drying happens in 24 hours, but full cure is 7 days, a period during which the surface should not be exposed to stress.
Where the system should not be used
The same data sheet is explicit about the limits. Wandepoxy is not indicated for swimming pools, water tanks and vitrified ceramic floors. Moisture resistance is not the same as waterproofing a structure subject to a permanent sheet of water or to water pressure, so reservoirs and pools fall outside the indications. It is also a product for internal use, and the application conditions advise avoiding hot surfaces exposed to the sun, as well as rainy days, temperatures below 10 ºC or above 40 ºC and relative humidity above 85%.
How to prepare and apply to preserve the resistance
For the resistance to hold up, preparation follows standard ABNT NBR 13245: a firm, cohesive, clean surface, free of grease, oil or mould. Masonry, plaster and concrete must be cured for at least 30 days. The system is two-component: the enamel is catalysed at 3 parts base to 1 part catalyst (ready-made colours) or 4 to 1 (tinting system), with an induction time of 15 to 20 minutes and a mix pot life of 6 hours at most. Thinning is done with Diluente Wandepoxy (Wandepoxy thinner). The same system applied to iron, steel, aluminium and galvanised metal is covered in the guide on the Coral Wandepoxy epoxy paint for metal, and the step-by-step on tiled surfaces in the guide on how to apply Coral Wandepoxy epoxy on bathroom and kitchen tiles.
Between 2 and 3 coats of the enamel are applied, with an interval of 12 to 48 hours between them. After the full cure of 7 days, maintenance cleaning is done with a soft sponge dampened with water and neutral detergent, which helps keep the film smooth and easy to clean over time. Application requires a ventilated environment and the use of gloves, safety goggles and a mask for organic vapours. For the vertical surface of external walls and facades, where the function is to repel rain, a different product applies, the Coral Proteção Sol & Chuva waterproof exterior paint.
Frequently asked questions
What does the Wandepoxy film resist?
It resists moisture, chemical products, abrasion and alkalinity, and is indicated for bathrooms, kitchens, canteens, hospitals, industrial and domestic piping and concrete floors.
Can it waterproof a pool or water tank?
No. Moisture resistance is not the same as waterproofing a structure under a permanent sheet of water or water pressure. The system is not indicated for swimming pools, water tanks or vitrified ceramic floors.
What conditions should be avoided during application?
Hot surfaces exposed to the sun, rainy days, temperatures below 10 ºC or above 40 ºC and relative humidity above 85%.
How long until the resistance is fully in place?
Final drying happens in 24 hours, but full cure is 7 days, during which the surface should not be exposed to stress.
